What NOT to say when communicating with Dmoz editors

Lets see, your site was submitted to Dmoz several years ago, you don't know whether the editor has reviewed and rejected your site, if it's still waiting for review, or if it even made it into the category for review. Should you contact the category editor or not? And, if so, what should you say to them? Well, I'll give you some pointers on how to make good with your category editor(s).

The rules for communicating with editors dictate that you should always be respectful. Yes, it's very frustrating waiting for several years without knowing the status of your site. In fact, you might be inclined to contact the editors out of anger and demand a listing. I can guarantee that that route won't work. Sometimes you'll get results by being an insulting jackass, but when someone doesn't have to do something for you then you've pretty much burned a bridge by communicating with them disrespectfully. Editors are those volunteers that owe you nothing and don't have to act on anything you demand. So, if you send an editor an angry e-mail demanding that they list your site then insult them in the mist of that anger, then expect your request to be ignored. Here are a few DON'Ts when communicating with Dmoz editors while asking for a favor at the same time.

When sending Dmoz editors an e-mail inquiring about your site DON'T:

1. Begin your e-mail with "Hey, jackass, list my site!"
2. End your e-mail with "Now, jackass, list my site!"
3. Use foul language.
4. Accuse the editor of being corrupt.
5. Assume your site was not listed because the editor is your competitive.
6. Lie. [Editors are able to check when a site was submitted as well as the title/description you gave it]
7. Accuse Dmoz of being full of corrupt editors.
8. Try to bribe the editor with money or some other kind of equal exchange.
9. Call the editor every name in the book.
10. Tell the editor you'll ruin his/her reputation if they don't list your site.
11. Threaten to file an abuse report against the editor if they don't list your site, unless of course you have proof beyond your site not being listed that the editor is corrupt.

When communicating with editors you have to realize that they're under no obligation to list your site, so use your charm and be tactful in your communication because you'll most likely get better results than going the obnoxious accusatory route.
